Today, lots of people with wear green and celebrate the Patron Saint of Ireland.
Here are the four most important things you need to know about St. Patrick's Day....WHO? WHAT? WHEN? and WHY?
WHO: St. Patrick – Patron Saint of Ireland
St. Patrick was captured as a teenager by pirates and brought to Ireland where he became a devout Christian.
After spending six years in captivity, he escaped back to England after he wrote that he had heard the voice of God speak to him in a dream telling him to leave Ireland.
Patrick said that when he reached England he had a second dream where an angel told him to go to Ireland as a missionary. He trained as a priest and was sent to Ireland to convert the Irish to Christianity from Druidism and to help other Christians who were living in Ireland.
WHAT: Remember to wear green
It may surprise you to find this out, but the traditional color for St. Patrick’s Day was blue. Since Ireland is called the “Emerald Isle” and St. Patrick used the green clover to teach about the trinity, people started wearing green and picking clover to wear on the holiday.
WHEN: St. Patrick died on March 17th, which is why we celebrate St. Patrick’s Day on that day every year,
WHY wear the green....so you won't get pinched
There is also a legend that leprechauns will pinch you if they see you. And guess what, leprechauns can’t see you if you are wearing green. But remember to pinch anyone that is not wearing green to remind them that the leprechauns might see them. If you see a leprechaun, don’t let him out of your sight! That’s the only way to catch one. And if you catch one, you just might get a pot of gold.
Happy Saint Paddy's Day! And "Give Me A Call, Y'all"!
